Paintball Basics

Paintball is an exciting game involving teams competing against each other to eliminate opponents by hitting them with capsules (paintballs) filled with water-soluble color and a gelatin outer shell that are fired from a compressed gas powered gun called a marker. It is a sport that has evolved to a professional level where many players are paid for their participation and skills. The game is very fast paced and requires a lot of agility, stealth, and teamwork to be successful.

The players are grouped into two teams and are set up at opposite ends of the field. Once everyone is ready, the referee will either shout “game on!” or blow a whistle to start the game. The teams will then try to accomplish the objective that is set while eliminating opponents and making it to the opponent’s base. If a player is hit, they will call themselves out by raising their gun over their head and saying “paint check”. They must then leave the field and go to the dead area.

A hat or toque is often worn by all levels of players as it protects the forehead from direct hits, and stops sweat from running down in to the mask. Another common accessory is a neck-warmer which helps to keep the player warm. Some players will also wear camouflage clothing to help blend in with their environment.

The most basic goal of a paintball game is to control the majority of the field early on, by being the first player to get to advantageous obstacles or by establishing defensive positions that will thwart opposing attacks. A good way to do this is to practice creeping around and staying low. It will help you avoid getting shot and it’s much more fun than running around like a chicken with its head cut off!
