Paintball Basics

Paintball is a fun, exhilarating, outdoor sport that requires strategy and teamwork to succeed. Players use air-powered guns, called markers, to shoot small paint-filled pellets at opponents, marking them as “eliminated.” Games are typically played in a large outdoor playing field or an indoor arena. Referees enforce safety and game rules. Physical contact is not allowed, and players ejected from the game or field for violating safety or game rules are not permitted to return.

Players are issued a set of gear, including overalls or body armor, face mask, goggles and gloves, before they enter the field. They are also given a marker, which has a barrel to load the paintballs, a trigger to fire them, and a hopper that holds the supply of paintballs. Players may choose to play a variety of different game modes, from the childhood favorite of “capture the flag” (where teams try to capture the other team’s flag and bring it back to their base) to free-for-all deathmatches where everyone fights until one person remains.

The best way to improve your skills is to practice and play often. Learn to move quickly and effectively between cover, staying low and peeking out only when necessary. Be sure to stay hydrated and remember that the best paintballers aren’t necessarily the fastest or strongest, but those who are smart and know how to utilize their environment. It’s also important to practice your accuracy, as many beginners find themselves shooting too far and hitting things they don’t intend to hit.
